Common Questions

  1. What is my WatIAM account or userid?
  2. A WatIAM account or userid is not your student id. It is typically a combination of your initials from your given/first names, possibly some digits, and your surname (or family name). A WatIAM account is up to eight characters long. For example, Jonathan William Smith may have an account or userid of jw25smit

If you have forgotten your account or user Id, you can:

    1. Search by your surname/family name in the WatIAM White Pages; an entry for your account will not exist if you are an applicant or if you are hidden.
    2. Use the 'Forgot Your User ID?' button on the WatIAM Login Page. This feature will not work if WatIAM does not have an email on file for you. Any values you enter must match with the values we have on file.
    3. If all else fails, send an email to helpdesk@uwaterloo.ca describing the problem you are having.

  3. I have already activated my WatIAM account, but I have forgotten my password and the answers to the authentication questions. What should I do?
  4. WatIAM does not email passwords. If you have forgotten your passwords and the answers to your authentication questions, you will need to contact helpdesk@uwaterloo.ca and ask for your account to be deactivated. Once it is deactivated, you will need to go through the activation process again by choosing a new password and answering AT LEAST THREE authentication questions. You need to see the message 'Your activation is successful' to be activated.

  5. I tried activating my account a few weeks ago and it said it was already activated. I tried the 'forgot my username' button. It says it found a match, but there is no email to send it to.
  6. If you have forgotten your userid and you are a student or employee, you can query the White Pages to discover your userid.

WatIAM does not know your email until one month into your first term of being a student. You will need to contact an administrator by sending an email to helpdesk@uwaterloo.ca to have your account deactivated. Once it is deactivated, you will need to go through the activation process again by choosing a new password and answering AT LEAST THREE authentication questions, but THREE is enough. All of the questions you answer are presented when you forget a password, so answering all ten questions is not necesssary. You need to see the message 'Your activation is successful' to be activated. Write down your userid or remember it. This userid will be used to access many applications at UW.

  7. I am having a problem signing into Quest. I have activated my account on WatIAM. When I sign into WatIAM, I see "Change My Password", Change Answers To Authentication Questions" and "Update Profile" listed. There is no summary of my application, nor my application status.
  8. WatIAM is a system you can use to manage your WatIAM account. This account can be used to log into Quest and other applications, including WatIAM itself. When you see the "Change My Password", "Change Answers To Authentication Questions", etc., you are successfully logged onto WatIAM and your userid and password are working. To log into Quest, you need to go to http://quest.uwaterloo.ca/ and login with your WatIAM account and password. There you will find any of your applicant or student related information.

  9. I have forgotten my password. When I try to use the 'Forgot Your Password' button, I get a message "Too few questions defined in policy" or "Too few user questions answered based on the configured minimum answer count of 3."
  10. Please contact helpdesk@uwaterloo.ca or your local faculty help desk to have your account deactivated. Once it is deactivated, you will need to go through the activation process again by choosing a new password and answering AT LEAST THREE authentication questions. You need to see the message 'Your activation is successful' to be activated.

  11. I tried activating my account, but WatIAM said that the account was already activated. I have no recollection of activating my account.
  12. Try closing your browser window and then try to activate your account again. Double check the format of the birthdate - the birthdate needs to be entered in this format with the slashes: MM/DD/YYYY (e.g. 09/05/1990 for September 5, 1990). You also need to enter your student number (or employee number, if an employee), and the correct spelling of your surname (including capitalization) before you continue.

  13. I am getting the following message when I try to log into WatIAM: "Login attempt failed for user XXXXXX -Identity Manager; User controls no organizations and has no capabilities."
  14. You are using the incorrect web address/URL to sign in. You need to sign into the user interface at: https://watiam.uwaterloo.ca/idm/user/

  15. I can successfully log into WatIAM, but I cannot access Quest or other applications (such as myHRinfo, Learn) that use the WatIAM userID and password.
  16. For login issues with Quest, take a look at the Quest 'How do I ...? Instructions for using Quest'. Other applications, such as Learn and myHRinfo have help pages as well.
